Tutor BIO

Hello. My name is Steven, and I'm a native English speaker from Canada.

I am certified by Cambridge University to help students prepare for the IELTS exam, and have taught many, many students how to get the score they require.

I have also shown a lot of people how to improve their fluency, grammar, and vocabulary with speaking practice and written assignments.

The greatest satisfaction I get to enjoy from teaching online is hearing about my student's success, and how they are moving on to the next stage of their lives. There really is nothing better!

I live in Calgary, Alberta, which is in Canada. I have been happily married for 20 years, and we have one daughter. She is currently 12 years old.

Personally, I love swimming, camping, hiking, reading, cooking, watching movies, listening to music, and spending time with my family.

I originally started teaching English in Japan, taking care of corporate clients.

I've been teaching English online for almost 5 years now. I was teaching in Japan for a year, so all told, I've been teaching ESL for about 6 years now, mostly online.

I'm TEFL certified, so I can help international students with their reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I'm also certified through Cambridge to help students prepare for the IELTS test, and improve their band score.

I use fun and interactive lessons to encourage my students to practice speaking as much as possible, and provide feedback every 10 minutes or so to help them correct their mistakes.

The reason I teach ESL online is that I have found that many students who take English classes in a traditional setting spend most of their time focusing on reading and writing. They don't have many chances to listen or speak.

When I teach lessons, my main focus is always on allowing my students to speak more than I do, and encourage them to develop their skills.

Personally, I think this is what they are missing out on when they attend traditionally structured English classes, and it's extremely valuable.

If you're still reading, but you're not sure whether I'm the right tutor for you, I suggest you watch my introductory video.

It's a great way to get to know me a little better, and see if my teaching style could work for you.

If you really like the video, and you think you would enjoy taking lessons with me, the next step is to book a trial lesson.

So what happens during a trial lesson?

The first thing we'll do is discuss why you want to improve your English, and the best ways I can help you.

Then I'll give you a quick tour of Preply Space so you know where everything is, and how to use valuable resources like the Preply Library.

I'll also ask you about your favorite activities and hobbies. This gives me the ability to create personalized lesson plans for you.

If you like the trial lesson, and decide to continue taking classes with me, you can purchase a lesson package from Preply.

Then you just go to my schedule, and book your lessons at times that work best for you. (The times are listed in your local time, according to your time zone, not mine)

That's the basics of the process. But if you have any questions, please message me, and I'll get right back to you!

Thanks for reading, and I really look forward to meeting you!

Steven
